Law Enforcement Liaison Clinician

About the Role:

The Law Enforcement Liaison Clinician will work with core emergency services team and law enforcement to identify clients in need of services and to take a more proactive approach in meeting program demands. The overall goals are to reduce unnecessary Emergency Department utilization, assist in diverting inpatient psychiatric admissions by providing counseling and therapeutic support to clients in crisis, with the emphasis on reducing unnecessary interactions with law enforcement to decrease incarceration rates and over utilization of other Emergency personnel. This position is responsible for providing mental health crisis assessment, intervention and brief treatment services to a diverse population of clients in crisis. In addition, the crisis clinician will provide appropriate recommendations for care and linkage services for clients requiring on-going treatment.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with core crisis team and law enforcement to provide support to clients in crisis, reduce unnecessary interactions with law enforcement or the criminal justice system.
  • Collaborate with core crisis team to identify clients currently in crisis, or at risk of going into crisis, to better assess overall needs and to assist them in meeting those needs.
  • Assist in reducing unnecessary Emergency Department utilization by clients with primary mental health needs.
  • Work with Agency staff to provide appropriate level of support in an effort to reduce inpatient psychiatric admissions.
  • Proactively reach out to identified clients who are at risk of relapse or mental health crisis.

Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in clinical psychology, social work or related field is preferred, Bachelor's degree required.
  • Experience working in crisis, emergency room, or community-based services preferred.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of psychopathology, crisis theory and other behavioral health concerns and primary modalities of psychotherapeutic intervention.
  • Experience in crisis intervention services, risk management, assessment of suicide potential and integrated treatment for co-occurring disorders preferred.
  • Ability to join with clients and families in distress and work with them in disposition planning.
  • Must be willing to provide services in clients' homes and community settings.
  • Must be available to work shifts as assigned including overnights and weekends.
  • Must have a valid driver's license, reliable transportation with personal automobile liability insurance coverage at or above the levels mandated by the State of Vermont.
