Adult Services Peer Specialist

About the Role:

The Peer Support Specialist, an active member of the Adult Services team, is a role model, advocate, and support to individuals receiving services. While utilizing their own life experiences, the Peer Support Specialist will provide clients with intensive services including peer support, group facilitation, coping skills coaching and activities of daily living (ADL) instruction. This position allows for creativity, and developing areas of interest in how services and supports are provided to individuals. This program provides a place and community for clients to feel safe, learn skills, connect with peers, and identify new areas of interest. When appropriate and helpful to the client, the Peer Support Specialist will share relevant personal experiences that foster hope, resiliency and decrease stigmatization of mental illness.

Responsibilities:

  • Act as a role model for individuals seeking to achieve or maintain long term stability.
  • Requires lived experience with mental health and/or substance use.
  • Assist clients in articulating personal goals for recovery through the use of one-to-one and group sessions.
  • Guide clients to identify, create and develop a wellness support plan using skill, strength, support and resources to meet goals.
  • Help individuals who have long or recurrent involvement with psychiatric, forensic, or substance use facilities to identify precipitating events, coping skills and strategies to change these patterns.
  • Work with individuals to examine their experience with mental health or substance use challenges and help them to determine what is helpful ad what supports they need to navigate difficult times.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Required to have lived experience with mental health and/or substance use.
  • Able to work alternative work schedules, evenings and weekends as needed for operations and at the request of management.
  • Must have a valid driver's license, reliable transportation with personal automobile liability insurance coverage at or above the levels mandated by the State of Vermont.
  • *Successful completion of a criminal history background check after hire.
